Ffilm Cymru puts spotlight on mental health

ScreenSkills presents MindSet, in association with Ffilm Cymru Wales, a new mental health awareness training programme for film and TV producers, managers and Heads of Department.

Taking place at Cardiff’s Tramshed Tech on the 14th and 15th of January 2020, this intensive and insightful training course will give participants the tools to create safe and inclusive working environments in which mental health can be discussed in a professional, open and relaxed manner.

Day one will be led by training organisation and mental health charity Cardiff Mind. Day two has been shaped through the expertise of film producer and psychotherapist Rebecca Day (Film in Mind), who will deliver a range of bespoke sessions tailored towards sector-specific issues. Each participant will then receive a one-to-one mentoring session with Rebecca as part of a personalised follow-up to the training programme.

MindSet is supported by the ScreenSkills Film Skills Fund with contributions from UK film productions and delivered by Ffilm Cymru Wales, in association with BFI NETWORK Wales & BAFTA Crew UK. ScreenSkills is the industry-led skills body for the UK’s screen industries.

As part of their Well-being of Future Generations Plan 2019, Ffilm Cymru are committed to developing a healthier and more equal film industry for Wales. To that end, they are also devising a film education programme exploring mental health issues around Craig Roberts’ new film Eternal Beauty. Launching later this year, Life Through My Lens will work with young people to examine representation of mental health on film and challenge stereotypes. The project will also give participants the opportunity to get creative and share stories by making their own films.

Funded by Ffilm Cymru, the BFI and the Wellcome Trust, Eternal Beauty is a refreshing and deeply personal depiction of schizophrenia starring Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins, which recently premiered at the BFI London Film Festival.
