Ffilm Cymru Wales supports feature film project development, from treatment stage through to pre-production.

We prioritise feature film projects involving a Wales born or based writer, director or producer but we will consider feature films with significant Welsh cultural value.

Covid-19 Support

As part of our Covid-19 support package for the Welsh film industry, Ffilm Cymru has launched an accelerated Development Fund for writer, director and producer teams developing their feature film projects.

Applicants will be able to include overhead, legal, accounting and other business-related costs, alongside innovation-related costs, such as testing audience demand and exploring IP exploitation.

This fund is open now and will remain open to applications on a rolling-basis. We expect to offer funding equivalent to an average 12-month period within the first 6-months of the year.

We receive in excess of 100 applications for development funding and make an average of 12 development awards a year.

We support world-class live-action, documentary and animated feature films, as well as cross-platform projects which have a feature film at their core. We’re always looking for unique stories, which speak to a variety of different audiences (particularly those under-represented in mainstream cinema), which is why Inclusion (behind-the-camera, on-screen and for audiences) is at the heart of everything we do. This commitment to Inclusion is always guided by the context of working in and for Wales and our broad slate of feature films includes Welsh cultural content and work in the Welsh language as well as projects likely to be international co-productions.

We encourage recipients of our development funding to build demand for their project from the earliest stages of development. We work with filmmakers on Inclusion plans and through our Magnifier system, we offer audience-testing, brand extension and networking opportunities at key junctures in the development of your film. We may at our discretion fund additional IP related to your feature film, should well-developed plans emerge.

Our funding is intended for projects that are unlikely to be fully financed by the market and so require National Lottery support.

Filmmaking teams applying for development funding should be able to evidence previous experience in writing, directing and producing. Less experienced talent or talent without a producer should ordinarily refer to our BFI NETWORK Wales, which is supported by the BFI.

Please ensure you have read the Development Guidelines in full and discussed your project with a member of the team before completing the application form. Online Talent Surgeries

To support the industry during this challenging time, Ffilm Cymru are hosting talent surgeries every two weeks over the phone or online.

If you’re 18 or over, born or based in Wales, and aspire or are already working as a writer, director or producer for film, we want to hear from you. There is no upper experience cap and we encourage filmmakers of all levels to sign up. The surgeries are an opportunity for you to gain strategic advice from FfCW execs on a one and one basis and will occasionally feature inspiring guest speakers too.
